As the numbers of braggy students on college campuses continue to climb, college educators should flummox increasingly aware of issues regarding the mixed age college classroom. Concepts of learner identities and learn careers have recently acquired popularity as ways of analyzing participation in learning among young adults. Non-traditional learners, adult learners who are age 21 or older, have many obstacles to overcome in their following for knowledge. Adult learners have a high cognitive capacity, except it is essential to reinforce the interaction between learner and instructor in any classroom situation (Aber, Joanne. 1996).
When I interviewed an adult student who is employed full-time, as a result of a divorce, is now single and wishes to complete a breaker point weapons platform at my school. According to her an adult student is defined as an independent student; a person with dependents; a commuter student (living off-campus) and will commute to campus to attend class; or lifelong learners who generally are 25 years or older, and/or have additional responsibilities such as family, career, military, or community, and are seeking a degree or opposite educational offering (credit or noncredit) to enhance their professional and/or personal lives.




As a chemistry major 19 years ago, Jane 40, became pregnant with her first child and dropped out of college to stand her daughter and climb the corporate ladder as a marketing manager for a major car lease company putting her dreams of becoming a physician aside. today she spends four to five days a week doing enquiry in a biochemistry lab and is working toward her undergraduate degree in chemistry again, in pursuit of an eventual MD/PhD.
