Critical Analysis

Paul Gauguin, a famous French artist, once said, contrivance is either plagiarism or revolution.(Brainy Quote) In Marcel Duchamps work, Fountain, I believe it is certainly the latter. Duchamp has been referred to as one of the well-nigh important artist of the twentieth century. His first ready-made switch began a movement that would sprout art off of the mainsheet forever. Fountain, created in 1917, was in fact a urinal purchased from J. L. Mott Iron working in New York. It was made of porcelain, 360x480x610 mm and displayed upside down.(Fountain) Duchamp subscribe the work R. Mutt, perhaps to hide his identity in this venturesome piece. His first attempt to exhibit the urinal was denied by the Society of strong-minded Artist, to which Duchamp belonged. The show was to accept all work submitted. Conceptual artist Fred Wilson is best known for his innovative juxtaposition of art objects he mines from museums collections. Over the away decade, Wilson has been rearranging and reinterpreting collections to evoke stimulating, emotional, and even explosive responses from the public. His installation titled, Guarded View, 1991, consisted of 4 mannequins 75x48x166 inches, painted brown and dressed in museum guard uniforms from different museums around New York.
