A statute is an operate of parliament. Statutory interpretation is the process by which courts interpret and gain legislation. It normally involves the legal determination of questions relating to the scope, meaning and applicability of a particular statute to a particular factual function by the judiciary. Canons give common sense guidance to courts in interpreting the meaning of statutes.
In common law countries, rules of blondness and construction have been developed and are employ in order to avoid awkward situations that may arise as a result of interpreting laws literally. These rules include the literal rule, the fortunate rule, the mischief rule as well as the ejusdem generis rule. in that respect are mainly three major rules or canons to statutory interpretation viz the literal rule, golden rule and mischief rule. save there are other rules used by resolve; these include, Eiusdem generis, expressio unius est exclusio alterius and noscitur a sociis rules.



Internal and external aids are in any case applied during interpretation and it should not be forgotten that in order to apply fair justice presumptions are besides made by the judges. All these are discussed below.
1.THE LITERAL convention
This rule is to the effect that words in statutes are to be given their natural and ordinary meaning. This rule is usually applied on straight forward and simple words in statutes. In Abley v Dale , Jervis CJ stated, if the words are clear and unambiguous, in or judgment we are bound to construe them in their ordinary sense, even though it do lead in our view of the case to and absurdity or manifest injustice.
