The book Sweetgrass starts off by introducing the main character Sweetgrass and her outflank friend Pretty-Girl. They are gathering strawberries in fields and public lecture of marriage, waiting for the men of the tribe to come back from a raid. When they get back to the village they see all their love ones that returned from the raid, including her almost brother Otter, and her love Eagle Sun. Soon by and by this her best friend Pretty-Girl gets married to Five Killer, also her family from other tribe comes to visit. After a couple days release Sweetgrass and Pretty-Girl go to the river to draw water early in the morning time to catch up and to talk, mean while they hear zip fastener and this frightens them so they ran back to camp fearing a bad omen. thusly during that day her tribe was attacked, during this time of ciaos she was home and her almost engender made Sweetgrass lead the family away from the camp to safety. But during this an confrontation grabbed her and threw her to the ground scraping her shoulder up pretty bad. erst healed it was almost time for the sun dance festival to take place, this is when all the tribe come together to respect and to get married, followed by a great buffalo describe before winter begins.



So naturally Sweetgrass was excited because she was hoping to connect Eagle-Sun this sun dance, but to no avail neither of them got married. So when time came for the buffalo hunt her younger brother Otter went with her forefather on the hunt, he got to kill his first buffalo and when Sweetgrass went to go butcher it up it sprang to life and charged right at her. Otter seeing the situation from the hill rode down on his cavalry and killed the beast, but not before it landed on Sweetgrass do her unconscious. When she awoke the healer told her nothing was broken and she would be fine in a couple days. Four days later Eagle-Sun invited Sweetgrass to match ball with him by the river that night.
