Gothic storytelling carries many controvert connotations, but it has a purpose. While it strikes fear into the hearts of roughly people, it is meant to convey an ethical message. These tales depict women as naïve, weak and vulnerable. Therefore, women are not allowed to be bold or adventurous.
The morals in Gothic tales circulate around reactionary ethics. Meaning, there are rules set by tradition that women are not meant to break. Rules, such as sweet some one below your social class, or leaving the safety of the simple country for the sins in the big city. Porphyrias Lover shows a woman who transgresses social boundaries for love and pays for it with her life. In The Whimper of Whipped Dogs, the main character, Beth, leaves the safety of the country to explore life in the dangerous city.
Women who break with tradition are punished for their actions.

Porphyria had broken the rules by falling in love with someone below her station. In the end she was punished by the one she loved.
