Woody Holton gives us the encounter of the slaves/African Americans who served in the revolutionary war. Many slaves went in the military service with hopes that whizz day they would soon be broad. During Jeffersons Declaration of independency many enslaved African Americans found opportunities in the war. A mess hall of the slaves even ran away from their plantations to join the army camp, because the British government said that any slave who joined the army would be forfeit.
Due to the lack of education and status in society many African Americans were only allowed to do jobs in which skills were non needed to perform. Many Africans were in the war for months with teeny-weeny or no pay. In fact, some did non let their discharge after their services were rendered. Men who returned home were left wing abandoned and received no assistance. It was even a two-year span in which Jacob France returns from the continental with no discharge or documents stating that he was in service (pg.67 Black American in the basal era, Woody Holton).
After serving some African Americans were found by their masters and taken back into enslavement. The American Revolution gave thousands of African Americans the opportunity to peruse their dreams of being free through combat in the war.



Many petitions were signed and the British filed lawsuits because of the oppression that the African Americans had endured after the war. After the war, many whites saying that these African Americans deserved freedom because it was a right. Many others did not support their beliefs and felt that African Americans should always be in bondage. state said, African and their American descents were an inferior race that could not survive on its own (pg71 Black Americans in the Revolutionary Era).
